Captain Chip Fischer & Hanamana

Captain Chip Fischer

With the name Fischer, Captain Chip was destined to fish. Growing up in Oregon is where he first developed his passion for fishing. In 1970, he moved to Kona, Hawaii to work alongside his father Captain Jack Fischer on the Hanamana.

With over 40 years experience fishing in Kona, Captain Chip brings a wealth of knowledge and a level of expertise and professionalism that has raised thousands of fish and placed in many tournaments.

Captain Jack and Esther Fischer visited Kona often during the 60’s. It was a no brainer to build a custom boat for Kona. Hence, Hanamana (working force) was brought over in 1966. There were only a handful of boat charters at that time. Many captains and crew learned their trade on the Hanamana.

Hanamana was rebuilt and repowered in 2008 with new twin diesel Cummins, rebuilt electrical systems and updated state of the art electronics. Hanamana is a custom 38’ LOA. She has a comfortable bridge and plenty of salon seating, clean marine head and oversized gunnels safe for dolphin viewing and whale watching. With Captain Chip Fischer carrying on the family legacy, there is pride of ownership. Hanamana is well maintained, clean and comfortable. Equipped with snorkel gear, underwater hydrophone (to listen to the humpback whales), top of the line Penn International reels, custom rods, large cockpit for handling big fish, and state of the art electronics.

Dear Capt. Fischer, I wanted to personally thank you for everything that you did to make my fishing trip on the HANAMANA a memorable and enjoyable experience. You worked very hard to make my wife and I comfortable on the HANAMANA. You were very friendly and kind the whole day. I appreciate the fact that you rearranged your schedule so that I was able to fish a whole day when originally the trip was scheduled to be a half day trip. It is quite obvious that you have a great passion for fishing. I really enjoyed your insights and knowledge that you shared.

This was the most memorable and exciting day of fishing that I have ever had. My wife felt that you went out of your way to make her feel comfortable on the charter too. She hasn’t stopped talking about the fun that she had out there watching me fish. That is high praise, especially coming from someone like my wife who doesn’t enjoy fishing the way I do. The accommodations that you provided on the HANAMANA were without a doubt the best that I could have hoped for.

Your Mate, Chad Contessa, worked very hard as well. I would certainly recommend your services to anyone who was looking to have an exciting day of fishing in Kona. It was quite obvious that you know a lot about catching fish in Hawaii. I have never done the type of fishing that we did on the charter, but I felt adequately prepared because of the special attention that you and Chad gave me while on the charter.

When the time came to catch the fish, I knew exactly what to expect and how to handle the situation. I just can’t thank you enough. It was quite noticeable that we had a better day fishing than most of the boats that were on the water. I’m sure much of that can be attributed to your years of experience on the water. It sure was exciting when we hit that school of Mahi-Mahi. I have never seen anything like that before. Catching three of them at one time was beyond my wildest dreams. The Spearfish that you helped me catch was beautiful. Thanks to you, I was able to catch two trophy size fish in the course of the trip.

I hope to “hook up” with you and Chad again someday soon. I know without any doubt that you did everything you could to make the day enjoyable. I’m going to try hard to make it back in the summer when the Marlin bite is on. Take care of yourself and thank you for the most awesome day of fishing that I have ever had.

Sincerely yours,
Ward W.
